ABOUT THIS PICTURE
In the 1780s, Nikolaus Simrock’s publishing business, which would eventually grow into one of the largest in Europe, was still in its infancy, relying either on local copyists (some of whom worked officially for the court) or prints produced in Vienna or Paris. In this 1790 advertisement in Bonn’s newspaper, the Intelligenz-Blatt, Simrock is advertising some of his newest wares, among them excerpts from some of the operas being performed at the court theater.
